A building control system for the 21st century

The Building Control Alliance (BCA) has published a report, A Building Control System for the 21st Century, containing key recommendations on what the Government needs to do to improve the building control system.

The report, a response to the Department of Communities and Local Government’s (CLG) discussion paper, highlights areas where change should be a priority.  They have strong opinions on three key areas - self certification, prior approval and the building notice system.

Chair of the Building Control Alliance David McCullogh said:

“BCA aims to work alongside the Government to strengthen and develop the Building Control system, which is integral to the construction industry. There has been some criticism about compliance levels across the construction sector and while these shortcomings need to be addressed, we are delighted to report on the vast improvement in building standards driven through building regulations over the last 40 years. This development needs to continue into new areas, especially sustainability and security.”

“We feel that most of the problems occur at the bottom end of the industry and the systems need to be strengthened to protect the conscientious developers and construction firms.”

The report is split into two: summary of recommendations and the full report. These will be made available in both pdf format and hard copy.
Both reports are available to download in pdf format from the top right hand corner of this webpage
