The RICS Building Surveying Faculty is the home within the RICS for professionals who have an interest in the design, construction and management of real estate assets.
RICS faculties are responsible for setting the strategic direction for the future of their specialisms and for identifying and serving the information needs of their members. (For web features and information relating to Building Surveying please visit the Practice Areas).
The Building Surveying Faculty has approximately 25,000 members who benefit from:
- An internationally respected qualification that is recognised as the ‘gold standard’ of professional competence
- A regular and up-to-date professional journal that provides advice and commentary on key issues facing the profession
- In-depth practice standards and guidance on a wide variety of professional topics
- Access to a cost-effective programme of training events
- A structured training plan for new entrants into the profession that culminates in an Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) and, ultimately Chartered status
- The ability to lobby and influence government and other policy makers on the future direction of the profession

- Access to a network of like-minded professionals through discussion forums.
The faculty is also responsible for setting and maintaining the APC/ATC competencies that make up the APC/ATC pathways for the Building Surveyor and contributing to the professional assessment of mature entry candidates.

The faculty provides help and advice to its members and the general public and seeks to stimulate debate and innovate on matters relating to building standards. As a faculty member you will receive regular industry news via e-briefs and through your dedicated technical journal RICS Building Surveying. You’ll also have opportunities throughout the year to network with similar-minded surveyors at various events and conferences.
About the board
Members of the RICS Building Surveying Faculty Board come from a variety of backgrounds and have a diverse range of skills and experience. The Board has a number of working groups and also produces regular progress reports. The working groups include:

- Building Surveying Journal Editorial
The faculty also has a number of steering groups, including:
- Practical guide to sustainable buildings
- Mind the Gap – an education and training framework for building surveyors.
