carbon management of real estate

Carbon management of real estate – a guidance note

28 March 2008

With the use of energy in buildings responsible for approximately 40% of EU carbon emissions and non-residential buildings responsible for approximately half of this, the realisation that 'business as usual' is no longer an option presents both a threat and an opportunity for RICS members. Members who are able to advise clients seeking advice on the carbon management of their real estate will win business over those who fail to equip themselves with the requisite knowledge and experience.

RICS has, for the first time, published official guidance which offers a very solid foundation to bring carbon management within the competency of members who have responsibility for real estate management. Dr Ann Heywood, Principal, College of Estate Management and Chair of the RICS Sustainability Commission said:

"This timely guidance will be of great assistance to all chartered surveyors who are consultants, whether internal or external, when advising businesses on the carbon management of their real estate. It can prove invaluable to have a full understanding of the business case to manage and reduce carbon emissions, and this document both outlines how to prepare the business case and signposts the reader to further information"

Developed by the Management Consultancy and Facilities Management faculties, with contributions from the Carbon Trust, Kings College London and CLG, the guidance note includes how to develop a carbon management strategy, baseline assessments and managing and measuring performance.
