Rural Housing

06 September 2007

The need to introduce higher levels of affordable rural housing in the UK has been discussed for several years but has had its profile raised recently by the report of the Affordable Rural Housing Commission (ARHC).

Key issues include a lack of affordable homes for first time buyers and young families, a shortage of affordable retirement homes and a lack of affordable rental accommodation.  Second home ownership is an issue in many rural areas but is not the only issue affecting affordable rural housing.

RICS’ position in a sentence

New investment in rural housing is essential but it must be part of a wider programme of encouraging economic activity in rural areas where economic, social and environmental considerations are addressed and innovative approaches are taken in particular the use of community land trusts.

RICS’ recommendations

·         Community Land Trusts should be encouraged to reduce costs for those who are seeking to buy a home.

·         The planning system should ensure that affordable housing units are delivered alongside other developments.

·         Housing should be considered as part of a wider package of measures dealing with economic, social and environmental matters in rural areas.
