Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) were introduced in 1999 in England and Wales by the Town and Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) (England and Wales) Regulations 1999 and in Scotland by Environmental Impact Assessment (Scotland) Regulations 1999. These Regulations implement Directive 85/337/EEC as amended by Directive 97/111/EC.
