BERR approves waste-fuelled power station

24 September 2008

The UK government has announced the approval of a new power station in Cheshire to be fuelled by waste diverted from landfill.

The construction of a 100MW Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility in Runcorn by chemical manufacturers INEOS Chlor Ltd, was approved by Malcolm Wicks, Energy Minister at BERR.

The facility will burn up to 850,000 tonnes of refused-derived fuel annually, composed of treated waste from Manchester, Merseyside, Halton, Cheshire and Warrington.

In addition to electricity, the usable heat produced will be incorporated into an on-site combined heat and power (CHP) system.

The energy recovered from the waste fuel will make a significant contribution to the considerable requirements of INEOS Chlor’s chemicals manufacturing complex.
