2008 Asian Housing Review

01 October 2008

The RICS Asian Housing Review provides a detailed analysis of the development and performance of the housing markets of six countries in Asia - China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand.

It sets out how housing systems have evolved against the wider national economic and socio-demographic contexts of selected Asian countries.

It highlights key drivers of housing demand and government initiatives which have shaped delivery of homes over the last 50-60 years.

Over this period, all of the Asian countries reviewed in this report have had to respond to intense housing needs and a dearth of housing units.

Increasingly, demand has evolved for good quality housing, as national economic growth has led to improved living standards and rising incomes.

This trend has been most evident in urban areas, which are the focus of this report.

Nonetheless, impoverished areas, in the form of shanty towns and slums in both rural and urban locations, remain a key feature of many Asian countries.

The executive summary and individual country chapters can be accessed as PDF downloads.
