Law and practice of rights of light – problems and anomalies

Theoretically, there are five ways of acquiring a right to light but only two are of any really practical importance. 

One is by an express grant which will depend upon the precise terms of the grant but these terms can be so variable as not to give rise to any general rules. 

The most common way of acquiring a right is to have the benefit of some natural daylight, without interruption, for 20 years, the 20 year period being defined in the Prescription Act 1832. 

It is this second method of acquisition on which my thoughts are based.
