Who can use RICS designations?
If your practice provides surveying services, it may use 'chartered surveyors' with, but not as part of, its name if:
- you are a sole principal, or at least 50% of the practice’s partners or directors are fellows or professional members; and
- no partners or directors have previously been expelled from RICS and been refused reinstatement;
- the practice is regulated by RICS (UK firms only).

Note
- Whenever the names of partners or directors are listed, their RICS designatory letters must be included.
- Practices may also use alternative chartered designations – such as Chartered Environmental Surveyor – if any principal, partner or director has the right to use it.
- You must not link other words to the designation ‘Chartered Surveyors’ in any way that suggests that a particular activity has the chartered status when it does not (see the second of the ‘wrong’ examples listed on the following page).

The right alternative designation
Each fully qualified RICS member has the right to use the words ‘chartered surveyor’, although this differs for member firms.
But some faculties may allow you to use a more specific chartered alternative designation (CAD).
You do not automatically qualify for the CAD if you are a faculty member.
If you have the right level of experience and work in the relevant area of surveying, your faculty may award you the right to use it.

- Arts and antiques - Chartered arts and antiques surveyor
- Building surveying - Chartered building surveyor/Chartered building control surveyor
- Commercial property - Chartered commercial property surveyor
- Construction - Chartered construction surveyor
- Environment - Chartered environmental surveyor
- Facilities management - Chartered facilities management surveyor
- Geomatics - Chartered land surveyor/Chartered hydrographic surveyor
- Management consultancy - Chartered management consultancy surveyor
- Minerals - Chartered minerals surveyor
- Planning and development - Chartered planning and development surveyor
- Project management - Chartered project management surveyor
- Quantity Surveying - Chartered quantity surveyor
- Valuation - Chartered valuation surveyor
